THE MATRIARCHAL CULTURE, VALDIVIA

The Valdivia Culture located in the Ecuadorian territory discovered in 1956 by the archaeologist Emilio Estrada, born in Guayaquil, is considered to be the oldest in the American continent between 4500 and 2000 years BC. and is considered a "matriarchal" culture.

WOMEN MADE DECISIONS
According to studies, such as those of Aurelia Harof, creator of the "Valdivia Warmi Women's School of Ancestral Knowledge", the organization of this culture was matriarchal, that is, men did not make decisions, especially in matters of social organization, families and production, but women did.

She said that agriculture, ceramics and goldsmithing were developed there. "There they grew cocoa, that fruit did not come from another place," she said.

WHAT ARE THE “VENUS OF VALDIVIA”?
The "Venus of Valdivia" are clay figures and are famous for highlighting nude female forms, and for having hairstyles of different sizes. The highest the hairstyles indicated that the woman had a higher hierarchy within her group.

The faces of the figurines are similar: the eyes are two slanted lines, some have eyebrows, others do not, most do not have a nose. The arms go together on the body and the legs without feet. The shapes are rounded, the sex is marked, and the breasts are clearly distinguished.

WHERE WERE THEY FOUND?
They were found in tombs and buried in fields. It is believed that they would be a kind of amulet or fetish to fertilize the earth and to promote fertility, since some pieces represent the different fertile moments of women: youth, childbirth, pregnancy.

It is believed that the women gathered to make ceramics and they gave the guidelines for planting and harvesting food, guided by their astrological knowledge, which is reflected in some sculptures, where the southern constellations can be seen.
